Italian jets on NATO air policing duty shoot down a drone believed to be carrying explosives after it entered Lithuania from the direction of Belarus

A drone has been shot down in Lithuanian airspace for the first time. Explosives were found on the craft, which stayed inside the country for about 30 minutes. The incident was the most serious in a series of Russia-linked tensions in the Baltic in the same days.

PRATKUNAI, LITHUANIA

On 15 September 2026 Italian Eurofighter jets on NATO's Baltic air policing mission shot down a drone over the village of Pratkūnai near the Kaunas Dam. The village lies in Kaišiadorys district, about 100 kilometres west of Vilnius. According to Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre, the drone most likely entered from Belarus and flew around populated areas for about 30 minutes. Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said the explosive device in the wreckage had been neutralised by disposal teams. It was the first time a drone had been shot down in Lithuania.

The incident shows NATO deterrence on the eastern flank being tested on the ground. European Commission President von der Leyen described it as part of a pattern of aggression and provocation towards Europe. German Foreign Minister Wadephul held Russia responsible. NATO Secretary General Rutte called such incidents a sign of Putin's desperation. Flares fired at a Danish helicopter, a train struck on the Polish border and a search for drone wreckage in Germany in the same days are adding to the tension. Political pressure over Baltic air defence and EU defence spending is rising.
