With the increase that came into force at midnight on 17 September 2026, the price of a litre of diesel passed 100 lira for the first time in Türkiye's history. Sources conflict on the size of the increase: Cumhuriyet wrote that the rise was 4 lira 80 kuruş a litre, while Habertürk gave the increase as 4.62 lira. There are small differences in the prices as well. According to Cumhuriyet, diesel reached 100.40 lira on the European side of Istanbul, 100.20 lira on the Anatolian side, 101.50 lira in Ankara and 101.80 lira in Izmir. Habertürk reported prices for the same day of 100.31 lira on the European side of Istanbul, 101.43 lira in Ankara and 101.70 lira in Izmir. Petrol traded in a band of 80.20-81.60 lira and LPG at 34.39-35.09 lira.

According to Habertürk this was the third increase in a row: petrol had risen by 3.20 lira on 12 September and diesel by about 6.5 lira on 15 September. Cumhuriyet listed the causes of the increase as volatility in global markets, movement in the exchange rate and successive rises in special consumption tax; Habertürk pointed to movement in the global oil market and developments in the region. According to BloombergHT data, the dollar traded at a buying rate of 48.6723 lira at 09.30 on 17 September, a gain of about 13.12% on 43.0312 lira at the start of the year; the rise in the exchange rate directly increases the cost of imported fuel. The sources consulted did not state which crude oil price level was reflected in this increase, and it could not be independently verified.

Talay assessment

Bottom line

Diesel passing 100 lira for the first time is a symbolic threshold showing that the external oil and freight shock has settled into the price floor in Türkiye through the exchange rate and special consumption tax. Because diesel is the main input for domestic logistics and agricultural production, this increase passes through to food and transport inflation with a lag. Three increases in five days suggest that the most likely path is for that pass-through to continue.

Likely effects

  • Turkish consumer inflationNegative1–6 months

Diesel is the main item in logistics costs; the litre price settling above 100 lira will produce second-round price rises in the transport and food groups within a few months.

  • Road haulage and agricultureNegativeWeeks

Margins narrow directly for hauliers and farmers whose main cost item is fuel; demands for higher freight and harvest charges will strengthen.

  • Fiscal policyUncertain1–6 months

Successive rises in special consumption tax support budget revenue while adding to the burden on households; that sharpens the tension between indirect taxation and the inflation target.

Possibilities, ranked

  1. 1
    The run of increases continues50%

While the exchange rate and oil stay elevated, the pump price becomes entrenched above 100 lira and further increases follow.

Watch: Diesel rising above 101 lira in Istanbul and a new special consumption tax arrangement

  2. 2
    Holding on a flat plateau30%

Oil falls back, the exchange rate moves sideways; the price fluctuates in a 100-102 lira band and no new increase arrives.

Watch: The dollar staying flat around 48.67 lira and no weekly increase arriving

  3. 3
    Cuts and a retreat20%

A marked fall in crude oil and exchange rate stability feed through to the pump as price cuts; diesel drops back below 100 lira.

Watch: Two consecutive price cuts and a sustained retreat in Brent
