Anti-Türkiye protests spread in Jubaland after the Doolow attack, with Turkish flags burned; Mogadishu defends Ankara
Jubaland's administration blamed Türkiye for an attack on a general's house in Doolow, Gedo. Thousands marched in Kismayo and Afmadow. The federal government and the Speaker of Parliament defended Türkiye. The attack has not been confirmed by an independent source.
According to a Somali Guardian report dated 8 September, the house of General Mahad Abdirahman, a former commander of the Islah Forces, was struck in the border town of Doolow on the night of Thursday 3 September. The general, his wife and several civilians were injured; no deaths were reported. Jubaland said two missiles had been fired and blamed Türkiye. Mogadishu, by contrast, maintains that the blast was caused by explosives inside the house. Thousands of people burned Turkish flags in Kismayo, Afmadow and Doolow. According to The Somali Digest, the frigate TCG Göksu docked at Mogadishu port on 5 September. Türkiye has not responded officially to the allegations.
Garowe Online reported on 12 September that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, whose term has expired, and Speaker of Parliament Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur had made coordinated statements defending Türkiye. At a forum in Mogadishu organised by Türkiye's Directorate of Communications on 10 September, joint efforts against disinformation were proposed. The backlash creates a reputational risk for Ankara, which has its largest presence in Somalia through the TURKSOM base, naval cooperation, hydrocarbon exploration and a planned launch site. According to The Somali Digest, the hydrocarbon agreement grants Türkiye cost recovery of up to 90 per cent. The tension is intertwined with the power struggle between the federal government and Jubaland leader Madobe.
