United States notifies Congress of a 48-aircraft F-35 sale to Saudi Arabia worth 24.3 billion dollars

The US State Department notified Congress on 17 September 2026 of the sale of 48 F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft to Saudi Arabia; the estimated value of the package is 24.3 billion dollars. According to Breaking Defense, the notification was made the same day by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), and the 48 aircraft are of the F-35A variant, accompanied by 49 Pratt & Whitney F135-PW-100 engines; the package includes communications equipment, spare parts, software and support equipment. The prime contractors are Lockheed Martin for the aircraft and Pratt & Whitney/RTX for the engine. Congress has a review period of 30 days; Al Jazeera recalled that Congress has rarely succeeded in blocking major arms sales. This would be the first F-35 sale to Saudi Arabia.
In its notification the State Department said the sale "will not alter the basic military balance in the region" and referred to long-standing US policy that Israel must retain its military edge over regional rivals; Breaking Defense wrote that it is not clear how the qualitative military edge requirement that Congress looks for has been assessed. The notification coincides with a period in which Riyadh is seeking support from Washington in its war against the Houthis in Yemen. According to Al Jazeera, the announcement came after the Houthis claimed on Wednesday to have shot down a Saudi F-15 over Marib; on Thursday at least five people, three of them children, were killed in Saudi-Houthi fighting. The sale plan was first disclosed in November 2025 during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's visit to Washington.
